How to come up with meals for dinner – 5 tips!

We’ve all had the following thought: “What shall I make for dinner?” Most of the time when we think this we just throw something together (not saying that’s wrong by the way), or we order takeaway. When I have this thought once in a while, I just shrug my shoulders and move on. But when I find myself taking “the easy way out” a bit too often it’s a sign for me to roll up my sleeves and get my game back on. The reason behind this is that I want my family to be eating healthy consciously again, so I return back to the approach I use to help them with that.

Plan your meals ahead and put the ingredients on your grocery list.

I’m sure that you’ve heard this one a lot. But it’s quite effective, you know. Make it a habit to sit down for a few minutes and write down what you’d like to eat the coming week. Don’t forget to write the ingredients of these recipes down also. I’ve had times that I thought “I don’t need to write the ingredients down, cuz I know what goes into those meals”, to find that I’ve forgotten something after we’ve done the grocery shopping.

If you just don’t know what to cook and you need inspiration

Got no inspiration, or ready to mix things up a bit? Pinterest, my friend, Pinterest. If you have no clue on what to make, just browse through the recipes and get inspired. If you do have an idea, but you’re not exactly sure what to make? Type some keywords in the search bar and see the results unfold before your eyes. My suggestions for keywords are: “healthy dinner“, “quick healthy dinner recipes“, “easy dinner recipes“, “buddha bowls” and “dinner bowl recipes“. As you can see, there are A LOT of recipes you can choose from. I bet that I’ll refer back to this post later just for the links haha!

Make dinner for two days…

…if that’s possible. This has made things a lot easier for me. As a mom of two little girls, I don’t have time to cook every day and be relaxed at the same time (power to the moms with more kids!), so I usually make a large dinner that we eat in two days. So instead of finding six or seven recipes, I just have to come up with three meals.

Write down what dinners you have made

This one is very helpful too! I often forget what I’ve made for dinner in the past. But if I write the meals that we’ve had down, I can always look back for some inspiration. If you get most of your recipes from Pinterest, make a draft in your email, and put the websites to those recipes in there. That way you have them at hand very easily!

Keep an eye out for deals at the grocery store

If there are some ingredients you cook with frequently and you can store them in your pantry, buy more of them when a deal is going on. So let’s say you love to have potatoes in your dinners, or sweet potatoes, or beans, lentils, rice, pasta…. you get the idea. If you have them stocked in your pantry, it becomes easier for you to make something if you need inspiration. This one is also amazing if you’re low on groceries but you can’t go grocery shopping yet.

    Such good ideas, especially about writing down past meal ideas. I always forget and sometimes I know I’ve made a really nice meal and forgot what I’ve done.

    Agree with Darlene! One kitchen session, two meals! It’s even better when the second meal is different. If I’m cooking sausages or chicken one night, I’ll often cook more than I need so that I can throw leftovers atop of bowl of pasta and add tomato sauce, or throw on some rice and add some beans and salsa. Easy peasy.

    Yes! Some excellent ideas. I’ve been in the habit of meal prepping for a few years now and it makes a huge difference. I especially like what you said about making dinner for two days. It doesn’t mean you have to eat that same thing, but whilst you’re already cooking, why not just make a bit extra that you can freeze and reheat later. Saves so much time!
